MENTAL PREPARATION

 

 

 

SELF TALK

  • Words that you say to yourself, out loud or in your head
  • How well do you use words, phrases and sayings to motivate yourself and help you to keep focussed on performance in training and competition

GOAL SETTING

  •   Your ability to set goals in the areas of training, personal performance and competition outcomes
  •   How good are you at setting different types of goals, your ability to evaluate those goals and how often you would use them

EMOTIONAL CONTROL

  • Looks at the way your emotions are affected by competition and training
  • How well are you able to control your emotions when faced with uncertainty, disappointment or after making an error

RELAXATION

  • Ability to control physical and mental reactions in exciting or stressful situations, so that you remain calm and in control
  • Your ability to relax when under pressure, and your ability to use relaxation strategies during training and competition

ACTIVATION

  • Ability to get pumped up using physical action and motivating self talk
  • Your ability to increase your energy levels before training and competition

VISUALIZATION

  • Ability of being able to see pictures in the mind, and being able to control those pictures to create a mental movie
  • Your ability to rehearse performance in your mind and your ability to control the images you see

ATTENTION CONTROL

  • Concentration, attention, control and focus are words which describe an ability to control what is being looked at, listened to and thought about
  • Your ability to concentrate on the job to be done in competition and training and whether you are able to control distracting thoughts when they occur

POSITIVE THINKING

  • Self talk that helps to motivate, improve confidence and focus attention on the job to be done
  • Your ability to think about positive and useful thoughts in competition and training
